Neurofeedback Training
“Neurons that fire together, wire together.”
– Donald Hebb
What Is Neurofeedback Training?
Neurofeedback is like exercise for your brain—guiding irregular brainwaves back into healthier patterns.
It doesn’t treat conditions directly. Instead, it helps the brain learn how to better regulate itself, which improves function across a wide range of symptoms. Using sensors gently placed on the scalp, brain activity is monitored and trained in real time through visual or auditory feedback.
Preparing the Brain for Neurofeedback
At Pietrantone Health, we don’t jump straight into neurofeedback—we prepare the brain first to maximize your outcomes. We evaluate, through muscle testing, how diet, lifestyle stressors, and potential toxic burdens may be interfering with how the brain is functioning. Addressing these aspect of health dramatically improves results.
Before training begins, most but not all, patients complete a personalized series of neurological exercises to activate and balance critical systems, including:
- The cerebellum (for coordination and motor control)
- The vestibular system (for balance and spatial orientation)
- One or both brain hemispheres, using targeted stimulation through a series of exercises.
We also incorporate photobiomodulation, a non-invasive light therapy that enhances brain function by increasing ATP production and improving circulation. While this adds to the time you spend in the office, it’s worth it. These tools work together to prime the nervous system, making your brain more adaptable and receptive to the benefits of neurofeedback.
“We are depending on the plasticity and capacity for learning of the brain.”
How a Neurofeedback Session Works
During a session, you’ll sit comfortably and watch a movie or animation on a screen. Sensors attached to your scalp and ears read your brainwaves; when your brain shifts out of optimal range, the screen dims or the audio changes. These subtle feedback signals guide your brain toward more efficient, regulated patterns—helping it “learn” through repetition. Most sessions last about 30 minutes.
The Brain Map (QEEG)
Your neurofeedback journey begins with a Brain Map, or Quantitative EEG (QEEG). This non-invasive assessment reads your brain’s electrical activity—delta, theta, alpha, and beta waves—and compares it to normative data. The QEEG gives us a personalized, data-driven view of how your brain is functioning and helps pinpoint which areas would benefit from training. This map guides the development of your customized neurofeedback plan.
“Neurofeedback trains the brain to function better. By reinforcing healthy patterns of activity, it promotes neuroplastic change that can reduce symptoms and enhance resilience.”
– Sebern Fisher
Author of Neurofeedback in the Treatment of Developmental Trauma
What Conditions Can Neurofeedback Help?
Neurofeedback can support recovery and regulation for a variety of conditions and concerns, including:
- Concussions & Brain Injuries
- ADHD & Learning Difficulties
- Anxiety, Depression, & PTSD
- Insomnia & Sleep Disorders
- Chronic Pain & Fatigue
- Memory Loss & Cognitive Decline
While we don’t treat these conditions directly, we support the brain’s ability to function more effectively, which often leads to meaningful symptom improvements.
What Results Can You Expect?
Most plans include around 40 sessions, though some begin noticing changes within 10 to 20. Everyone progresses at their own pace—lasting results come with consistency and time.
- Improved focus and concentration
- Better emotional regulation
- Increased energy and patience
- Higher-quality sleep
- Reduced mood swings, agitation, and anxiety
- Fewer physical symptoms related to stress
The brain is learning a new, healthier way of functioning—lasting change comes with consistent training and reinforcement.
“Neurofeedback allows the brain to rewire itself, using its own neuroplastic potential to heal from trauma and restore self-regulation.”
– Bessel van der Kolk, MD
After Neurofeedback: Making the Change Stick
Neurofeedback is passive, but sustaining the benefits is active. Once your brain has developed healthier patterns, it’s important to support those changes with good habits and a brain-friendly lifestyle.
Helpful Practices:
- Mindfulness, prayer, or meditation
- Regular time outdoors (sunlight, walking, hiking)
- Stress reduction strategies
- Repairing and nurturing relationships
- Healthy eating and hydration
- Avoiding toxic influences and overstimulation
Breaking old habits and avoiding environments that pull you back into old brain patterns is essential to maintaining long-term gains.
Guided Home Neurofeedback Training
For patients who live far from the clinic or need greater flexibility, our Guided Home Training program delivers the benefits of neurofeedback—right from home. This remote option uses EEG-driven protocols to monitor and train brain activity, aiming to improve mental function, mood regulation, and overall cognitive performance. The same core technology used in-office is available in a compact home-based system, allowing for consistent training without frequent travel.
Two Equipment Options
You can choose from:
- Bring your own computer (must meet requirements: Windows 10, quad-core CPU, 8GB RAM, sound card, internet access)
- Use our all-in-one system, which includes a preconfigured computer and monitor for plug-and-play convenience
How It Works
- Start with an in-office Brain Map (QEEG) to identify your specific training needs.
- Complete a few in-office sessions, if possible, so we can observe your response to various protocols.
- Receive personalized training on how to use the equipment. We’ll walk you through setup, and you’ll have access to video tutorials for additional support.
- Begin training at home, in a quiet, softly lit room, free of distractions and electronics that could interfere with EEG signals.
- Stay connected with weekly check-in calls to track progress, adjust protocols if needed, and keep you motivated.
Each session is recorded through a secure, cloud-based system, allowing our team to review your progress remotely and make data-driven adjustments along the way.
Professional Care, Home-Based Convenience
Our home training program delivers the same clinical precision, structure, and oversight—without the commute. It’s an ideal option for patients who want frequent sessions, fewer office visits, and consistent support from professionals who know their brain.
